Watkins, Peter
   b. 1935
   Film-maker
   A RADA graduate and pioneering dramadocumentarist, Watkins introduced his documentary reconstruction technique in Culloden (1964). He began working for BBC documentaries in 1963, but resigned following their international suppression of his nuclear film The War Game (1965). He emigrated abroad after his first feature Privilege (1967). Against charges of hysterical paranoia, Watkins reconstitutes official truth and freedom narratives by questioning existing orthodoxies and repressive ideologies. His uniquely experimental style is invested with performative, realist and expressionistic elements in documentaries like Punishment Park (1971), The Journey (1987), The Media Project (1991) and the epic biographies Edvard Munch (1976) and The Freethinker (1994), about August Strindberg. Despite his continued marginalization by the film-making community, Watkins’ contribution remains pivotal.
